Take the road less traveled with this immersive 5-day Mt. Meru climb, Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a spectacular warm-up for Kilimanjaro. Towering at 4,562 meters, Mt. Meru offers jaw-dropping views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, abundant wildlife sightings, and a more secluded alpine trekking experience through lush rainforests, crater ridges, and volcanic ash trails.

Itinerary
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your representative greets you and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. Relax in your charming room with modern amenities Wi-Fi, hot water, a swimming pool, and lush gardens. In the evening, meet with your trek coordinator for a detailed safety briefing, gear check, and final preparations for the Meru ascent.
Note: Shared airport transfers are included for group arrivals. Additional charges apply for individual transfers. Sync arrival times to avoid extra costs.
After breakfast, drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Complete registration with TANAPA while porters organize your gear. The first day's hike resembles a walking safari expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, warthogs, and maybe even buffalo or elephants.
An armed park ranger escorts your group for safety due to wildlife presence. The trail winds through montane forest past the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru.
Elevation: 1,500m to 2,500m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Evening: Hot dinner and warm water upon arrival at Mirikamba Hut
Altitude Tips;
- Begin hydrating early – 4+ liters of water daily recommended
- Consult your doctor in advance regarding altitude medication
- Watch for early symptoms of AMS report any discomfort to your guide
Continue ascending along the scenic ridgeline with sweeping views of Meru Crater and Ash Cone. The terrain becomes steeper and more rugged as you enter the alpine zone.
Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, take time to rest or join your guide for an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for bonus views and altitude adjustment. Early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit push at midnight.
Elevation: 2,500m to 3,570m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Start your summit attempt around midnight. Ascend steeply to Rhino Point (3,800m) and along a thrilling ridge past Cobra Point (4,350m) to the summit of Meru Peak (4,562m). With luck, you’ll catch the sunrise over Kilimanjaro, floating above a sea of clouds.
After photos and summit celebrations, descend via the same ridge to Saddle Hut for brunch. After a brief rest, continue the descent through lush forest to Momella Gate.
