Itinerary

Day 01 :

Drive to Lake Natron – Enter the Rift Valley

Begin your scenic drive north from Arusha or Moshi, passing through Mto wa Mbu and descending dramatically into the Great Rift Valley floor. Travel past ancient volcanic landscapes, dry riverbeds, and wide acacia-dotted plains with extinct volcanoes Gelai and Kitumbeine rising in the distance, and the ever-dominant Oldoinyo Lengai shimmering ahead.

By midday, arrive at your camp nestled beside the Engaresero River. In the afternoon, stretch your legs with a hike to hidden waterfalls tucked in the steep cliffs of the western Rift Valley escarpment a refreshing prelude to your volcano trek.

After dinner at Kamakia Camp, take a short nap before departing around midnight with your driver-guide for the ascent of Oldoinyo Lengai. Your 4–5-hour hike under the stars leads to the summit crater, where if conditions allow you’ll witness molten lava glowing against the darkness. A truly spiritual experience.

Day 02 :

Oldoinyo Lengai Summit – Rest Day & Recovery

After soaking in the sunrise from the summit with panoramic views reaching into Kenya and beyond descend slowly back to the vehicle and return to camp.

A warm shower and late breakfast await at Kamakia Camp. Spend the afternoon in peaceful rest or enjoy a short walk near camp for sunset views. This is your time to replenish energy, reflect on the night’s powerful climb, and reconnect with nature's rhythms.

Foot soak or massage (if facilities are available)
Star-gazing by the campfire

Day 03 :

Lake Nateron Flamingo Walk – Maasai Culture – Return to Arusha/Moshi

After an early breakfast, join a local Maasai guide for a walk around Lake Natron, a surreal soda lake known as East Africa’s most important flamingo breeding site. Admire thousands of flamingos feeding in the alkaline shallows and learn about the lake’s unique ecosystem.

En route back, visit a Maasai “boma” village for a hands-on cultural exchange. Learn about Maasai traditions, architecture, beadwork, and pastoral lifestyle. Then return to camp for a final lunch before departing back to Arusha, Moshi, or Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward journey.
